Australians and South Africans already enjoy strong ties. The countries share similarities of culture, climate and history. Both countries were once colonies under British rule, both had gold rushes and significant Asian immigration. Australians and South Africans are relaxed, informal and straightforward in their approach to business. They share a love of sport, particularly Cricket, Football and Rugby Union.
In recent years, two-way investment and trade-flows between Australia and South Africa have expanded. South Africa is now Australia’s 21st largest trading partner, and is by far its largest and most dynamic market in Africa. Over the past five years, bilateral trade has grown by ten per cent per year.
South Africa and Australia are two of the most exciting growth markets in the world. Their economic growth rates are set to accelerate, fuelled by resource booms, expanding domestic markets and increased international trade.
Many businesses, particularly resource companies, including BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, have business interests in both Australia and South Africa. Australia’s Monash University has established a campus in South Africa. Further contact and strengthening of the bilateral network will identify further opportunities for trade, investment and the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and skills.
The Australia South Africa Business Association (ASABA) provides quality networking events for the exchange of ideas and opportunities.
